FAQ
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy healing practice developed by Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist, in 1922. The word is broken down into two meanings: “Rei” means God’s wisdom or higher power, and “Ki” which is the life force energy. Other systems refer to this as “Chi” or “Prana.” The Reiki master channels energy to help activate the body’s natural healing abilities for both physical and emotional well-being. It involves a light touch (or no touch) on the body. Because touch is not required Reiki can be given long-distance by phone or just intention.
What can I expect during a Reiki session?
Everyone experiences Reiki differently, but most people find it very relaxing and calming. Some may fall asleep during their session. You may feel areas of warmth, tingling, or ease. Sometimes people report seeing colors or symbols, recall distant memories, and some people find an increase in psychic awareness. The Reiki master may also use sound in the form of musical instruments, chanting, or singing to help move energy. Crystals may also be used and placed on or around the client.
What is involved in a Reiki session?
The client lies on a massage table (or can be seated, if necessary) fully clothed. A session lasts approximately 50 minutes. The Reiki master places her hands gently on or above your body in specific energy locations. There is time at the end of each session to ask questions or receive intuitive information from the therapist. The energy is essentially channeled through the practitioner to wherever it is most needed for deep healing. Most clients report feeling a deep sense of relaxation and peace following a treatment. It is important to stay hydrated following each session.
What kind of things does Reiki treat?
Reiki has been used for decades to treat pain, anxiety, and depression. It does not replace medical expertise but is often helpful to incorporate into part of comprehensive care for medical treatment.
How long does the effect last?
This varies from person to person but typically for 3-7 days. While some effects may be instantaneous others may not be apparent immediately. Clients often report sleeping very well following a Reiki session.
Are there any negative aspects?
Because energy that is “stuck” or blocked is moved during Reiki, clients sometimes report experiencing headaches, stomach upset, or bowel movements following a treatment. It is very common to become tearful as energy is released, and this should not be the cause of embarrassment.
How can I prepare for a Reiki session?
Dress comfortably, relax, and enjoy the experience. If there are specific emotions or physical discomfort that you would like the Reiki master to address during treatment it is important to communicate this before the session begins.
Can Reiki unblock chakras?
Yes. It is all about moving energy through the chakra system to help restore the body’s natural balance and energy flow.
